Songs for Worship

Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.  Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Psalm 33:1-3 (NIV)

Embrace

Background

This song is based on Jeremiah 29:11-14, God's promise through Jeremiah to the exiles that He had a plan for them.  He would give them a future and a hope, and they would once again find Him when they sought Him.  This was encouraging news for the exiles who were experiencing the judgment of God.

These words are also an encouragement for us.  No matter how much trouble is around us, we can trust that God has a plan, and with God there will always be a future and a hope.  The cross always gives way to resurrection.

I wrote this song for the 2006 California-Nevada-Hawaii District (of the LCMS) Convention and its theme "Embracing God's Future."  The song is a proclamation that we and our plans are really in God's hands as he prepares a future for us.

Lyrics

Verse 1
You know the plans You have for us
To prosper us and keep us from harm
To give us hope for a future
Embraced by Your mighty right arm
Tomorrow dawns as a gift from you
Your blessing flows anew

Chorus
Embraced by Your mercy
Embraced by Your cross
Bringing joy in our sorrow
And victory to loss
We embrace Your mission
Sent forth by Your grace
For it’s Your hand we cling to
And Your future we embrace

Verse 2
We call on You as we come to You
We know You hear us when we pray
It’s You we seek with all our heart
And we find You in the words You say
Dispel the clouds of doubt away
Oh speak Your promise today

Bridge
Here in this place
Here by Your grace
We seek Your face, O Jesus
We answer Your call
Before You we fall
Surrender it all, O Jesus
All of our plans
It’s all in Your hands
It’s all in Your hands
