There has been renewed interest in the use of hymns in contemporary worship in recent years. Many artists have included hymns in their worship collections, sometimes updated or even completely reworked. (For instance, Jars of Clay's new CD "Redemption Songs," or Todd Agnew's "Grace Like Rain" - a reworking of Amazing Grace.) There is a rich treasury of spiritual texts and inspirational poetry in the hymnody of the church. This renewed interest in hymns is very welcome, lest this rich treasury be lost to present and future generations. One of my projects is to re-work hymns for the Lutheran Church. By "re-working" I mean giving the hymn test an entirely new setting. This is nothing radical, as there has been plenty of mix and match with hymn texts and tunes throughout the centuries. My goal is to rework some of the great Lutheran texts for the contemporary church.
