Here is Water

Background

When an official of the Ethiopian court heard the gospel from Philip while riding in his chariot, he responded by wanting to be baptized.  When they came across some water along the way, he said, “Look, here is water.  What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” (Acts 8:36 NIV).  This song celebrates that moment along with the baptism Philip provided in response.  God is at work in the water and the word, pouring out his grace, claiming sons and daughters as His own.

I wrote this song for the baptism of my grand-daughter, Saoirse.  In light of her Irish name, the song concludes with a benediction based on the Irish blessing.   Although written with female pronouns for a girl’s baptism, they can easily be switched to male for the baptism of a boy.
